Our Bay2Tray program feeds children locally sourced, nutritious meals, reduces food miles, and supports sustainable regional food systems, while also supporting our local working fishermen and waterfront communities.
We work with California school districts and institutions to deliver a local seafood species that was once discarded as bycatch. Rather than being cast aside, Pacific grenadier is now being served in public school lunches as fish tacos and in soups, processed fish sticks and outselling other popular entrées, even pizza!
Many students do not have access to healthy proteins like fresh seafood because of geographical or financial limitations. Creating nutrient-dense meals for under $1.25 per student (a typical school lunch budget) is incredibly challenging, and seafood is one of the most nourishing proteins possible, at any price.
Coupled with Bay2Tray's fishermen in the classroom visits, feeding students local seafood not only benefits them in the short term, but also in the long term by exposing them to the bounty of our oceans and the benefits of supporting local fishermen. As the farm-to-school movement has learned, introducing young students to local produce like carrots and kale at an early age develops healthy eating habits that support lifelong physical, mental, and emotional health and wellbeing. This is especially important in "food desert" communities where fresh, local foods are not readily available.
As the first program of its kind in California, we are committed to bringing Bay2Tray to more communities. If you're interested in learning more, please contact us. You can also download our flyer to learn more about the program and its benefits.
If you are a member of Real Good Fish, you have have the option to add $1.25 to your share each week to support this effort. Log in, or contact us to add it to your account!
